~ Alabama A&M University (AAMU), an 1890 Land-Grant institution located in the high-tech center of Huntsville in northern Alabama, invites applications for the positions listed below. ~

Situated in the northeast quadrant of the city of 200,000, the hillside campus is just four miles away from downtown Huntsville. AAMU offers its 5,500-student population a wide range of course offerings under the schools of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Engineering and Technology. The School of Graduate Studies serves about 1,400 and offers doctoral degree programs in Applied Physics, Food Science, Plant/Soil Science and Reading/Literacy.

Position Overview

This is a nine-month, tenure-track, academic appointment with additional three-month summer employment available and expected, the latter supported primarily from research grant funding. Initial summer support will be available.

Responsibilities

  • Teach (50%) undergraduate courses such as Forest Fire Ecology, Forest Pests and Protection, Dendrology, and Natural Resources Management, as well as graduate courses in the area of expertise.
  • Conduct scholarly research (40%) in forest fire ecology, management, and health.
  • Service (10%) to the department, university, and community by serving on committees, advising students, participating in recruitment activities and in stakeholder outreach.
  • Supervise master and doctoral level graduate students and serve on graduate student committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):

  • PhD in forestry or related discipline, with emphases in fire ecology and/or forest health, protection, or management.
  • At least one (1) forestry degree from a Society of American Foresters (SAF)-accredited institution.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license.

Preferred Position Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop a superior research program that advances our knowledge about prescribed forest fire, health, and resilience, and evidenced by a strong record of scientific excellence such as publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Certification as prescribed burn manager.
  • Previous record of success in securing and sustaining external competitive research funding.
  • A record or potential to successfully engage in outreach to landowners, managers, and other stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent teacher with demonstrated experience in field-based and hands-on teaching.
  • Strong commitment to promoting student diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to collaborate with other faculty in interdisciplinary projects.
