Description

~ Allegheny College is a highly selective private liberal arts college in NW Pennsylvania with an increasingly diverse student body and a dedicated faculty of teacher-scholars. ~

Allegheny is uniquely situated to support teaching and research in environmental science and sustainability, with an institutional commitment to sustainable development and carbon neutrality and a nationally recognized department of Environmental Science and Sustainability (ESS).

The ESS program has a robust curriculum to support student research, internships, international education, and civic engagement in Pennsylvania, nationally, and internationally.

Position Overview

The Department of Environmental Science and Sustainability (ESS) at Allegheny College invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2020.

The department seeks candidates with expertise in sustainability solutions utilizing multiple tools and disciplinary perspectives to understand interactions between natural and social systems. We are particularly interested in interdisciplinary teachers and scholars with experience including, but not limited to, climate change, urban sustainability, environmental communication, sustainable development, or coupled natural-human systems.

Responsibilities

While primary teaching responsibilities will be in environmental science and sustainability, Allegheny College has committed ongoing resources to build faculty clusters with expertise in race, gender, and/or social justice who could contribute to the core curriculum in one (or more) of three interdisciplinary programs: Black Studies, Community & Justice Studies, and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies.

This position will be in the cluster program and applicants are asked to demonstrate how their teaching and research experience intersects with one (or more of) these fields in their submitted materials. Faculty in the cluster program will be appointed in the Department of Environmental Science and Sustainability with clearly established guidelines and evaluation processes for contributions to other program(s).

The cluster program will offer professional development opportunities and we welcome teacher-scholars who are enthusiastic to collaborate with faculty colleagues and to mentor undergraduate students in the above interdisciplinary areas.

Teaching load is equivalent to 6 courses per year including core courses in the department’s curriculum and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. All Allegheny faculty participate in delivering college-wide first-year/sophomore seminars, in advising senior projects, and in our shared governance structure through service to the campus community.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. by the time of appointment is preferred and strong candidates will demonstrate evidence of effective teaching with a commitment to undergraduate education, including pedagogy and experience consistent with diversity, equity, and inclusion.
