Description

The School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor of Architecture in Sustainable Design.

The University of Texas at Austin is among the largest and most highly ranked public universities in the U.S.A. Its undergraduate and graduate architecture programs are ranked among the top ten, with particular strengths in design, history, and sustainability. The School offers three graduate degrees in Sustainable Design: the First Professional, the Post Professional, and the Master of Science or MSSD. The University also offers an Ad Hoc Interdisciplinary Ph.D. that can be applied to sustainability studies.

The Graduate Program in Sustainable Design was founded in 1972 and is the oldest of its kind in the nation. Rather than promoting a narrow pedagogical focus upon energy efficiency, the program considers how natural systems, building systems, and cultural systems co-evolve through transdisciplinary design practice.

The program is fully integrated with professional programs and enjoys strong research and co-teaching connections to Architectural Design, Historic Preservation, Interior Design, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, and Planning within the school; as well as engineering, humanities, public policy, law, and material sciences in other academic units.

Position Overview:

This position thus offers unique opportunities to the right candidate to grow personally and professionally at a salary competitive in the field, this through engaging in quality studio and seminar teaching, contributing to program development and community service, and pursuing design-related research, intellectual inquiry, and/or innovative practice.

The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree complemented by experience in teaching, research, or practice. The Ph.D. is a welcome additional credential, but is not required. His or her background should demonstrate strong capability in building performance analysis, thoughtful integration of sustainable technologies in design, as well as evidence of the ability to discover and respond to factual data, and to communicate ideas generally.

The ideal submission will also offer evidence that the candidate could teach effectively, direct student independent projects, and conduct scholarly research and/or design-practice at a level that promises future national and international recognition.
