The Gulf Restoration Network is committed to uniting and empowering people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf Region.

Position Overview:

The Gulf Restoration is looking to fill the Assistant Director of Science and Water Policy position. This position works within our science and policy team and requires a diverse skill set.

Reports to:  Matt Rota, Director of Science and Water Policy

Responsibilities:

Overall responsibility:

Oversees the GRN's environmental protection priorities in the state of Mississippi, represents the GRN for the State of Mississippi on the Mississippi River Collaborative, and coordinates with the Campaign staff on priority issues.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Watchdog the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality on their implementation and enforcement of the Clean Water Act
  • Interface with local community groups and the public on priority issues
  • Watchdog the US Army Corps of Engineers on their implementation and enforcement of the 404 program and Section 10 program
  • Write and publish technical reports
  • Media outreach
  • Investigate wetland and water pollution violation complaints for GRN members
  • Stay up to date with news, politics, and plans in Mississippi that may impact GRN's priority issues

Other Responsibilities:

  • Participate in staff meetings and assist other staff as needed
  • Author blogs and newsletter articles
  • Perform other duties, as needed

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in biological sciences, social science, policy, or law preferred
  • Excellent writing and communicating skills
  • Ability to travel frequently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of local, Mississippi culture
  • Good to excellent understanding of the Clean Water Act, NEPA, ESA

Compensation: Salary high $30,000's (depending on experience), full benefits (including insurance), paid vacation, and sick leave

Location: GRN New Orleans office
