Position Overview:

URS is seeking an alternative energy manager to lead our growing practice in Oakland. You will provide the vision, leadership and strategic direction for the promotion of our local alternative energy practice. This is a "hands-on" position, requiring solid technical, construction management, task management, and client relations skills.

Depending on individual performance, this position offers substantial development potential for a high energy, enthusiastic self-starter. Must be committed to providing value-added service to our clients. The candidate will lead project teams to provide planning, financing, modeling, design and construction management services on alternative energy projects.

Candidate will manage alternative energy (solar, biofuel, wind, hydrogen, geothermal, biomass) feasibility studies, including technical, economic, environmental, and regulatory issues. Candidate will write reports and work on multidisciplinary environmental impact assessments. Candidate will interface with clients, contractors, URS senior managers and URS' Alternative Energy Centers of Excellence.

Responsibilities include: 

Analyze market parameters and company service offering, Coordinate marketing measures, Generate sales leads, Lead business development efforts and make recommendations for growth opportunities, Produce sales orders by convincing customers on the merits of the financial, technical and/or environmental properties of an alternative energy system, Make business decisions relating to the practice, Coordinate with other West Coast offices performing alternative energy services, Work with and manage contractors and component suppliers to ensure projects stay on track, Prepare and/or review conceptual and detailed design drawings, specifications, and lists, and prepare engineering reports, Prepare detailed equipment specifications and evaluate bids, Conduct reviews and inspections of facilities and make recommendations for improvements, interface directly with clients and address client problems/questions/comments in a clear, professional manner.

Lead, manage performance, hire and retain personnel for overall success in the practice,manage the budget and profit and loss for the practice.

Requirements:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related degree; Masters degree preferred.  
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in energy system planning, design, installation, and/or O&M.  
  • Must have at least three (3) years in a leadership position and must demonstrate a proven track record of building, leading and managing an organization including budgetary and P/L responsibility.  
  • Registration as a California PE. Requires experience in developing and managing business in the alternative energy sector or similar industries.  
  • Power plant design and/or consulting experience with an emphasis on mechanical and renewable energy systems and equipment.  
  • Exposure to construction, commissioning, and operations.  
  • Experience with licensing and permitting of power plants is preferable.  
  • Must have strong commercial experience in working with utilities and Power Purchase Agreements.

The candidate must have a good understanding of finance and technical products. We expect the ability to communicate information effectively, both orally and in writing, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to prioritize and complete a variety of simultaneous tasks with a hard-charging team. The candidate has to be able to professionally represent the company and to actively educate prospective clients about alternative energy solutions. We also require the highest level of commitment and motivation to represent a growing practice.
