Description

International Rivers is a non-profit analysis and advocacy organization with offices in the US, Brazil, Thailand, India, and South Africa. International Rivers supports communities around the world in protecting their rivers and rights. We work to halt destructive dams and encourage better methods of meeting needs for water, energy and protection from floods.

Position Overview:

Although Africa's great rivers are considered "under-dammed" by global standards, the continent's large dams have consistently been built at the expense of rural communities. Across Africa, grassroots activists are showing how dam projects overlook the social, economic and environmental costs of these projects, and pressing for better alternatives. With our partners, International Rivers strives to promote sound energy and water developments based on social justice, equitable sharing of benefits and costs, and environmental sustainability; and river-development planning processes that ensure participation by local communities in decisions that affect their lives.

International Rivers' Africa Program is seeking an Africa Program Assistant that is passionate about environmental and social issues in Africa, and possesses solid research, writing and communication skills. The Africa Program Assistant will have the opportunity to communicate with International Rivers' global staff and partners, contribute to print and web publications, and be an integral part of a global environmental and social justice NGO.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and research development plans for the Grand Inga and Inga dams proposed for the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Conduct outreach to local community groups and NGOs.
  • Produce blogs and short reports for the website.
  • Maintain and update the Africa dams spreadsheet.
  • Assist the Africa Program Director with other research, administrative, and campaign related activities.

Qualifications:

Skills and experiences required:

  • Strong research, writing, editing and communications skills.
  • Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets, Photoshop, and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to multitask, stay organized, work independently and within a team, and keep deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and attention to detail.

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with GIS and other mapping tools.
  • Experience interacting with environmental NGOs.

This position will most likely be based in Pretoria, South Africa.

Compensation: The Africa Program Assistant's work schedule requires an average of 20 hours per week and will run from June to August (start/end dates are flexible). Compensation will be $12/hour.

To Apply:

Qualified applicants are encouraged to send a cover letter, 3-page writing sample, and resume to the Intern and Volunteer Coordinator, with the subject line: Africa Program Internship. NO CALLS, PLEASE. This internship posting will expire in May 1, 2012.
