Description
Adventure Scientists focuses on four impact areas aligned with our mission and strengths. Each impact area interacts with the others, building momentum for effective coalition-building and action. By focusing on forests, biodiversity, climate, and freshwater, we accelerate our partners’ ambitious conservation efforts and help shape a world that sustains us all.
Our Mission:
- We ensure the availability of critical field data that accelerates conservation and climate solutions.
- We achieve our mission by mobilizing and training outdoor enthusiasts and local communities to collect high-quality scientific data that are difficult to access, require too large a scale, or are too costly to obtain with traditional methods.
Our Vision:
- We envision a world in which people live in balance with nature.
- Data collection can be expensive, time consuming, and physically demanding, which limits the questions scientists can ask. Adventure Scientists tackles this problem by providing our partners with project planning, training, and field data collection to advance their conservation goals.
- Through their involvement with our projects, volunteers and communities become informed ambassadors for the species and places with which they work. By telling their stories in the rich tradition of outdoor adventure, we elevate our partners’ ability to bring their solutions to the world.
- The Adventure Scientists’ combination of constituency, visibility and data serves as an invaluable conservation and scientific accelerator around the world.

What is an Adventure Scientists volunteer?
Adventure Scientists’ volunteers EXPLORE the planet while making a difference. They COLLECT data to PROTECT critical species and ecosystems.
These are thousands of outdoor enthusiasts and community members who:
- Support conservation efforts and the scientific process
- Pay attention to detail when collecting data
- Creatively solve problems in challenging situations
- Engage their communities by sharing their experiences
What does a volunteer do?
Adventure Scientists volunteers collect important data for our scientific partners to create tangible, positive impact for the protection of our planet.
Each project is unique and requires different skill sets, but each volunteer will:
- Create a Community Platform profile and apply to a project of interest
- Complete a training to understand the logistics and data collection methods of each project
- Develop or be assigned a data sampling plan within a project’s geographic area
- Perform data collection by gathering samples, observations, etc. from the field
- Share your story on social media channels, or be featured in our blog!
FAQs
Does it cost anything to volunteer?
No, there is no cost to volunteer with Adventure Scientists.
Can I sign up as a group?
Yes, but every volunteer who collects samples needs to sign up individually and be trained through us. Any sample taken from someone not in our system will be rejected. If there are members of your group who are untrained to collect samples, consider having those members collect additional observations (e.g., date, time, GPS coordinates).
How else can I get involved?
In addition to becoming an Adventure Scientists volunteer you can sign up for our e-newsletter and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Connect us with people we should know. You can also donate to support our important work.
We work closely with the scientific community to develop rigorous projects that create impact. If your project meets our criteria, submit an online form via our project management page.
