Woolman Semester at Sierra Friends Center offers a 16-week rigorous residential academic program for teens in the fall and spring of each year. The semester school and our summer camps are focused on peace, social justice and environmental sustainability and based in Quaker values and practices. We are a small, multi-generational learning community of staff, students, interns and volunteers, nestled in the foothills of the Sierras in California, engaging in an experiment in sustainable community living.

Position Overview:

The Advancement Director works closely with the Admissions Associate to direct and perform outreach activities for the recruitment of students for Woolman Semester. The Advancement Director works closely with the Head of School and the Communications Coordinator to oversee all fundraising activities of Sierra Friends Center.

The primary admissions responsibility of the Director will be to coordinate student recruitment for Woolman Semester by creating and implementing a recruitment plan, developing relationships with sending schools, managing outreach travel and the admissions budget, overseeing the activities of the Admissions Associate, communicating with prospective families, interviewing applicants, processing applications, planning and executing outreach events, and overseeing marketing in collaboration with the Communications Coordinator.

The primary fundraising responsibilities of the Director will be to cultivate and strengthen relationships with donors, potential donors, parents and alumni of the school and camps. The Director will collaborate with the Board of Trustees' Development Committee to set and carry out the short and long term goals of financial support of the Center. At present, the position is expected to be .75 admissions activities and .25 development activities.

In addition to advancement responsibilities, the Director will be an essential member of the School's Leadership Team, providing administrative support for the Head of School. The Director will work collaboratively with the Head of School and Communications Coordinator in all outreach efforts. In addition s/he is expected to join other staff in making a full commitment to the maintenance and development of community life.  This includes participation in Quaker meeting, community meeting, chores, meal preparation, and other community support.

Qualifications:

Requirements for this position are:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Direct experience in both educational admissions and fundraising
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Experience planning events
  • Highly proficient in use of office technology
  • Ability to plan and implement nationwide outreach trips lasting 7-14 days.
  • Strong desire to live and work in a community setting.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have 3-5 years experience working in Admissions or Development
  • Be experienced in school administration
  • Be familiar with semester schools
  • Have prior experience leading, organizing and executing recruitment and fundraising campaigns
