Position Overview
This permanent, full-time position works closely with the Community Programs Director and Community Programs Coordinator to fulfill the important mission of Walking Mountains Science Center's community educational programs. This position plays an important role in the Community Programs department through program coordination and delivery of field-based and seminar programs for adult audiences. The Adult Programs Instructor reports to the Community Programs Director.
Responsibilities
Formal and Informal Interpretation and
Instruction:
- Plan, prepare, present, and evaluate a variety
of creative high content level interpretive programs for adult audiences:
- Extended hiking and snowshoeing interpretive trek
- Lectures, presentations, and seminars
- Hotel contracts and special request programs
- Serve as a host presenter for Adult Science
Seminars, Science Behind series and other programs - Actively research and expand knowledge of
general Rocky Mountain ecology and specialized fields such as botany and
ornithology - Expand and strengthen the adult program
offerings provided by Walking Mountains Science Center - Present weekly nature education segments on
local TV station - Staff Vail Nature Center, Nature Discovery
Center, and Walking Mountains Science Center exhibit spaces and answer questions,
teach, and provide information regarding the natural and cultural history of
Rocky Mountain flora and fauna, explain recreational opportunities, make sales
from Gift Store, and provide direction and routes of travel throughout White
River National Forest, as needed, especially in fall and spring seasons - Organize and coordinate Citizen Science learning
opportunities - Assist in mentoring and training seasonal
Naturalist staff, as needed - Collaborate with Special Events Coordinator and
Community Programs Director to create educational components of special events
and fundraisers - Other program planning and teaching

Program Administration:
- Collaborate with Community Programs Director in
the establishment of unique and individualized program opportunities - Market and promote adult programs including full
and half-day hikes, science seminars, and presentations to local and tourist
audiences - Work with Community Programs Director and Marketing
Manager to market and recruit program bookings and participation - Collect photos and other marketing content and
assist in the creation of program and destination-specific marketing materials - Manage and maintain budget for revenue-generating
programs - Develop relationships with concierge, hotels,
and businesses to expand the scope of audiences served - Document, maintain data, and generate reports regarding
programs participation and USFS and BLM public land use - Collaborate with Executive Director and Community
Programs Director to plan growth and development of future programs and
expanding program partnerships - Assist Community Programs Director with special
projects, as needed
Qualifications
- BA/BS in science, interpretation, education, or
an environmental science-related field - Excellent public speaking skills and willingness
to present to a variety of audiences - At least 3 years of field experience in
interpretation and/or environmental education including programs for adult
audiences - General knowledge of the tools and techniques of
interpretation including a working knowledge of the guidelines for
interpretation, the general organization and flow of interpretive presentations,
and interactive media - General knowledge of the natural and cultural
resources of the Rocky Mountains - Specialized knowledge or interest in a natural
science field, such as botany, mycology, ornithology, astronomy, meteorology,
etc. preferred - Creative in program design and development
- A positive, flexible and friendly personality
- Independently-driven team player
- Valid driver's license and ability to drive
15-passanger vans - Ability to hike 5-10 miles on steep, uneven
terrain carrying a pack up to 30 pounds several days a week - Knowledge and experience in using computers and
software including Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel, and internet - Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR
certifications - Ability to work a full time flexible schedule with variable hours and many
evening and/or weekend responsibilities
Compensation: $25,000-$28,000 annual salary,
health and dental insurance, 15 days paid vacation, 12 federal holidays, and
matching IRA program.
