Description
The New England Farmers Union (NEFU) is a membership organization working in all 6 New England states to improve the economic well-being of family farmers, fisherman, foresters, nursery growers and consumers. Our members include cranberry growers, small boat fishermen, dairy farmers, specialty crop producers, greenhouse growers, consumers, farm organizations and food co-ops throughout the region.
In 2009, the NEFU's board of directors established a vital new division of the National Farmers Union family. We started with an annual income of $20,000 and now have income of nearly $500,000. Our membership has expanded from 860 members to more than 1,400. We have grown from 1 part-time staff person to 3 FTEs in several states. We have attracted the investment of National Farmers Union in New England; we are doing pioneering research on carbon trading for New England producers; and we led a group of organizations to define a Northeast Farm Bill Agenda and are working to ensure its inclusion in the 2012 farm bill. We have raised over $1 million from public and private sources. Together, the board and staff have laid the groundwork for a member-led and farmer-driven organization that can serve farmers and fishermen in our 6 state region.
