Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) is a global leader in independent certification and verification of environmental, sustainability, stewardship, food quality, food safety, and food purity claims.  For more than 25 years, SCS has developed internationally recognized standards and certification programs in pursuit of the highest level of environmental performance and social accountability.

Position Overview: 

The Environmental Certification Services Program independently verifies the accuracy of environmental claims on manufactured products; highlighting manufacturers' efforts to improve selected environmental attributes of their products.  As an Account  Manager, you will be responsible for supporting the program through sales and client relationship management in coordination with a small team of account management colleagues. 

The Environmental Certification Services' programs include:  Recycled Content, Biodegradability, Sustainable Choice, Indoor Air Quality, Furniture Sustainability and more.  This position reports to the Director of Business Development and operates out of SCS's Emeryville, CA office.

Responsibilities:

  • Field direct calls from clients inquiring about SCS certification assessment;
  • Communicate in a professional, timely manner;
  • Clearly articulate SCS message within a competitive certification landscape;
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of each certification program, in order to evaluate recommendations before presenting to the client;
  • Qualify leads generated from potential client inquiries via phone, website, tradeshows, and other sources; and,
  • Develop proposals and close business through delivery of signed work orders with accountability for delivering strong financial results.
  • Be an internal account champion, assuring clear and regular communication to key company employees;
  • Interface with technical staff to facilitate timely service delivery;
  • Build strong, positive long-term client relationships by understanding current and future business issues and development of relationships with key decision makers and users within an organization;
  • Address client concerns and ensure the resolution of issues in a timely manner, with follow-up when appropriate; and,
  • Extensively track client projects and tasks using internal computer-based systems.
  • Produce account summary/analysis incorporating reporting and monitoring of client status;
  • Submit reports and all other required paperwork to management as directed in an accurate and timely manner; and,
  • Attend and contribute to internal meetings relating to the certification programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing or a related discipline;
  • 1 to 3 years of relationship or account management experience;
  • Strong written and verbal communication/presentation skills;
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to a rapidly changing environment;
  • Ability to understand and communicate technical information, internally and externally;
  • Comfortable conversing with technical and business client contacts;
  • Ability to work up and down an organization's hierarchy / departments;
  • Self-starting, focused and client-oriented;
  • Highly organized and detail oriented;
  • Ability to multi-task on several, unrelated projects simultaneously and meet deadlines;
  • Skill dealing with complex situations;

Knowledge of Microsoft Office software:

  • Ability to track and manage data and project files;
  • Regular travel not required, though intermittent opportunities available; and,
  • Commitment to SCS values and sustainability issues.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in inside sales, up selling or marketing;
  • Experience in outside sales;
  • Experience in event management and planning;
  • Familiarity with project management tools, procedures, software and life cycle; and,
  • Multilingual capability.
