The overall objective of the UNEP's Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive.

It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities (http://www.unep.org/dtie/). The position is located in the Economy Division/Economics and Trade Branch at the Geneva duty station, under the supervision of the Head, UNEP Finance Initiative.

Position Overview

This position is funded for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by Him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will coordinate the effective implementation of the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Investment Programme by:

  • Coordinating the planning, development and submission of the investment sector strategy and programme in line with the overall strategic and programmatic developments of UNEP FI;
  • Coordinating the implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, including the management of relevant stakeholders and partners;
  • Coordinating the activities related to project documents, budgets and legal agreements related to the investment programme;
  • In close liaison with the Signatory Relations, Communications and other team members, managing regular and close communications with UNEP FI's investment members and stakeholders, via e-mails, conference calls and in-person meetings, as well as news releases, newsletters and the maintenance of the investment pages of the UNEP FI's website;
  • Contributing to build and maintain strategic partnerships on investment issues with key stakeholders such as policymakers and regulators, international and multilateral organisations, non-governmental organisations, industry initiatives and associations, academia, and public and private financial institutions;
  • Identifying opportunities for up-scaling of the investment programme and contributing to related fund-raising efforts; and
  • Providing supervision to staff, consultants, project assistants and interns as necessary.

Contribute to the effective implementation of the overall UNEP FI's activities by:

  • Providing regular inputs to the UNEP FI's reporting lines (ie. UNEP FI Global Steering Committee and the Annual General Meeting as well as within UNEP) and reporting to them on progress;
  • Assisting the Signatory Relations and Regional team in coordinating awareness raising and outreach activities. Assisting in the promotion of UNEP FI to financial institutions globally with the aim to expand and reinforce the Initiative’s global representation, providing substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, and presenting on assigned topics/activites related to the investment programme;
  • Participating in umbrella activities not only within the Unit but also across UNEP as well as the UN system as assigned;
  • Supporting admininstrative and manegerial activities of the Unit as assigned; and
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
