~ The Soil & Water Conservation program traces its roots to the great dust bowl era of the 1930s. ~

In 1937, President Roosevelt wrote each state recommending the legislation that led to the State Soil & Water conservation programs. The Alaska Soil Conservation District Law was passed in 1947 during our territorial days.  Districts are legal subdivisions of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and are authorized under Alaska State Statute 41.10.  . As provided by AS 41.10.130 the Commissioner of Natural Resources is authorized to "Create Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the state. . . ." and " . . . delegate to the district supervisors powers as the commissioner considers necessary to accomplish the purposes of this chapter within district boundaries.”

Position Overview

Homer Soil & Water Conservation District is currently seeking a Forestry Program Coordinator. The person selected for this position will perform a variety of tasks associated with office work and fieldwork to support wildlife habitat enhancement and fire mitigation projects.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Forestry.
  • 3 years experience in forestry.
  • Must have knowledge of Kenai Peninsula timber types; insects/diseases of Alaskan forests; tree felling and slash disposal practices; and related forestry equipment.
  • Must have working knowledge of mitigating fire behavior through forest treatments, techniques that allow for increased moose forage; field safety procedures and basic training in first aid techniques.
  • Must have working knowledge of contract development and administration.
  • Working knowledge of the theories, principles, concepts, methods, procedures and techniques of forest management, forest engineering, and forest inventory.
  • Must be familiar with GPS and basic navigational skills.
  • Must have own vehicle and valid unrestricted Alaska driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work from home and have excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Must be prepared to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Must be able to meet physical demands of remote outdoor work.

Compensation

  • The rate of pay will be $25-30/hour, depending on experience.
  • This is a term position for two years, more years depending on funding, schedule flexible.
