Brazil Campaigner

~ The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington DC, is seeking a motivated, organized and committed campaigner to join one of the most dynamic advocacy teams in Washington, DC today. ~

EIA’s Forest Campaign exposes illegal logging, deforestation, human rights abuses and associated commodities trade, and supports civil society organizations engaged in forest governance reform around the world. EIA uses primary evidence obtained from in-depth research to document illicit and destructive practices and advocate for systemic policy changes in international trade and investment.

Position Overview

EIA-US is looking for an experienced and highly motivated campaigner to work with the Forest Campaign’s Latin America and Commodities teams, with a particular focus on Brazil. The successful candidate will bring their energy, creativity and talent to EIA’s mission of halting environmental crime, realizing the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, protecting environmental defenders, and stopping deforestation, building on the organization’s more than fifteen years of successful work in the Amazon region.

Responsibilities

• In close collaboration with the Commodities and Latin America Managers and the Forest Team, develop and implement innovative strategies to tackle illegal logging and deforestation, protect land rights, and improve forest governance in Brazil and the broader Amazon region through systemic legal and policy reforms.
• Help to build and engage with an extensive network of relevant stakeholders, including government and law enforcement officials, civil society groups, industry representatives and other stakeholders in Brazil and internationally.
• Lead or assist with data analysis and field work, in collaboration with civil society groups on the ground, to help gather information and evidence related to environmental crimes, deforestation, land rights violations, and human rights abuses, and associated international commodities supply chains and investment.
• Assess legal and policy landscapes relating to environmental protection, land tenure and use rights, land-use planning, human rights, and corporate governance in industrial sectors associated with commodities production and deforestation in Brazil; develop effective legal and policy recommendations and carry out advocacy for reform.
• Play a lead role in drafting reports, briefings, press releases, newsletters, blog posts, social media and website content.
• Work closely with local partners to implement joint strategies in the region.

Qualifications

Essential Expertise and Qualifications:

• At least 5 years of relevant experience carrying out research, policy and/or advocacy work on social, human rights and/or environmental issues relevant to Brazil.
• 4-year degree in a relevant field of environmental policy, business, economics, and political sciences.
• Background knowledge or experience in environmental policy, business, finance, economics, supply chain management, procurement and/or international trade policy relevant to Brazil.
• Strong demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative and cooperative approach to work.
• Ability to build and maintain effective networks with a range of people across a variety of settings and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, pay close attention to detail, and handle confidential information appropriately.
• Willingness and ability to travel and carry out field work internationally in challenging environments.
• Fluency in Portuguese and English.

Desirable Skills:

• Prior working experience or knowledge of the forest and/or agriculture sectors and related finance and commodities supply chains.
• Familiarity with databases, trade data, or geospatial analysis, and relevant software and programming languages.
• Experience working with journalists and media to advance campaign objectives. Spanish or French language skills
