~ Indian Orchards Farm is a small, family farm focusing on organic growing methods and sustainable agriculture. ~

Since 1902, five generations of the same family have grown apples, blueberries, peaches, raspberries, nectaries, plums, pears, and more. The farm is over 40 acres and contains older buildings on-site including an 200 year-old barn and a 1794 stonehouse currently in use as an AirBnB and as a site for weddings and other large group events. Though the farm has been around for over 102 years, the owners have always searched for innovative ways to continue their family tradition.

Position Overview

Indian Orchards Farm is currently seeking a full-time Farming Apprentice for the 2019 season, from July to October, with dates flexible on either end and the possibility for full-time or part-time work in future seasons depending on need and fit.

The apprentice will be involved in all operational aspects of the farm and the event site and will work side-by-side with the owner of the farm, with other staff, and independently. After a few weeks of training, the apprentice will be guided into a leadership role among other workers. The position is full time. Housing, food, a weekly stipend, and other perkswill be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for upkeep, appearance, and operation of Indian Orchards Farm.
  • Asissting with netting of blueberry and raspberry fields.
  • Zero-turn mowing during the summer and fall.
  • Pruning apples, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, and other fruit as needed.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of half-acre vegetable garden.
  • Occasionally working the farmstand as needed or in the busier fall seasons.
  • Repairs and maintenance of farm vehicles and machinery.
  • Occasionally leading tours or meeting with customers or potential event leads.
  • Assisting owner as needed.
  • Assisting with construction, modification and repair of barn, stonehouse, and other buildings on property.

Qualifications

  • Either a degree in a related field such as Agriculture, Biology, Environmental Science, etc, or currently enrolled in a program part or full-time.
  • 1-2 years of farming experience -- internships, volunteering, or personal.
  • Familiarity with/capable of maintenance on tractors, skidsteer, zero-turn mower,
  • Knowledge of biological principles of farming including PH, organic chemical mixing and application, etc.
  • Strong work ethic, ability to work outdoors for long periods of time.
  • Ability to deal well with customers, sometimes under stressful conditions.
  • Familiarity with weedwhacker, chain saw (a plus), tiller.
  • Ability to work independently and with direction.
