Position Overview

The City of Cupertino is committed to environmental sustainability, both community-wide and in our own operations. Sustainability is a key element of the City's General Plan and Climate Action Plan that lays out the specific steps for achieving aggressive greenhouse gas reduction goals.  The Sustainability Manager oversees the sustainability division located within the City Manager's Office. The ideal candidate will be a highly collaborative, innovative and creative individual with the drive and commitment to foster positive change to make the city of Cupertino world class in its pursuit of Climate Action Plan (CAP) implementation and greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Responsibilities

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. 

  • Coordinate sustainability activities among internal departments, external agencies and community organizations City-wide.
  • Organize and support the sustainability commission.
  • Serve as technical resource on sustainability initiatives, policies and programs.
  • Work with City departments to establish sustainable practices applicable to their respective functions and implementation of municipal measures in CAP.
  • Keep City current on Federal, State and local legislation affecting sustainability programs and projects, and analyze implications of new regulations and requirements.
  • Evaluate proposed sustainability measures to prioritize investment through life cycle and  cost/benefit analysis or other applicable metrics prior to implementation.
  • Develop and implement mechanisms to track progress in achieving environmental sustainable goals and objectives.
  • Research, seek out and write grant applications to implement CAP goals.
  • Act as a City representative on sustainability topics to private organizations and other government agencies.
  • Make presentations to Council, Commissions, other City departments and applicable outside organizations.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations using a computer.
  • Designs sustainable impact programs and present information to the public 

Qualifications

Knowledge of: 

  • Management principles and techniques.
  • Procedures for planning and coordinating community-wide sustainability and climate programs.
  • Principles and practices of public administration.
  • Budget preparation and administration.
  • Federal, State and local laws, regulations and ordinances.
  • Sustainable development programs.
  • Environmental education, technical research and report/grant writing abilities.

Ability to:

  • Develop, plan and coordinate community facing programs, and climate action plan implementation.
  • Ability to interpret and explain technical and/or complex policies and programs with clarity to a variety of audiences.
  • Conduct budget analysis and cost benefit analysis.
  • Demonstrate competency in facilitating groups, meeting management and consensus-based decision making
  • Prepare public information materials and information for print and web
  • Use computer and specialized software.

Education and Experience:

  • 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a related field; graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, economics, urban planning or other pertinent field.
  • Demonstrated progressive responsibility directly related to climate plans and/or developing environmental sustainability programs is highly desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license.

Compensation

  • $117,416.00 - $142,708.80 Annually
