Position Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join an exceptional company as Shift Engineer

The Shift Engineer is responsible for the critical operating activities of water treatment, equipment lubrication, issue response/troubleshooting, and repair and maintenance of plant equipment and facilities. Perform the duties of a Lead Engineer or Shift Engineer on a relief basis, or when assigned. 

Status: Non-Exempt 

Reporting Structure:This position reports the Operations Foreman/Chief Engineer and Lead Engineer or Relief Lead Engineer. 

Responsibilities

  • Operate the heating, cooling, distribution, and related equipment in a safe, efficient manner, ensuring compliance with all pertinent regulations, with minimal direction. 
  • Perform all in-field operation of: water treatment; gas, and oil burning equipment; chillers and cooling towers; and other plant equipment. 
  • Perform lubrication where required and on schedule specified by the Facility Lubrication Program. 
  • Assist in record keeping and maintenance of the plant logbook for all equipment. 
  • Perform housekeeping as specified in the Facility Housekeeping Plan and as assigned by supervisor or Lead Engineer. 
  • Assist Lead Engineer and Relief Lead Engineer in making adjustments to boiler and other equipment controls. 
  • Perform minor maintenance and/or assist in plant equipment maintenance. Perform minor maintenance walkthroughs for the purpose of repairing minor maintenance items. Document items found but not repaired on a Work Order. 
  • Perform equipment isolation and lockouts to assure a high degree of personnel safety and equipment protection. 
  • In the absence of the Lead Engineer or the Relief Lead Engineer, assist with monitoring and control of the facility in the Control Room.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Job Skills:

  • Education: NASOE (National Association of Stationary Operating Engineers) High Pressure Steam Engineer First Class, American Society of Power Engineers First Class License, or City of Milwaukee First Class License (or equivalent); Technical education related to above duties desirable. 
  • Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in the operation and repair of gas and oil fired boilers, steam turbines, electric drives, pumps, and related equipment. 
  • Skills: Demonstrated ability to direct others and to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Must be able to work with standard tools and equipment. Capable of working rotating shifts.

  • While performing the duties and responsibilities of this position, the employee is constantly required to walk, sit, stand; climb ramps and stairs; crouch, kneel; stoop; work in confined spaces; lift and carry up to 50 lbs; push/pull objects; reach at/below shoulder level; reach overhead; perform gross manipulation including seizing, holding grasping, turning or otherwise working with hands; keyboarding; drive company vehicles to include being able to operate foot and leg controls; communicate verbally to clearly impart information to other workers, customers or public; be able to hear, understand and distinguish speech and other sounds (machinery alarms, etc.); have near and far visual acuity as well as peripheral vision.
  • The employee is frequently required to climb ladders, ropes and scaffolding; crawl; and have fine manipulation to pinch or pick objects with fingers. The employee is occasionally required to use a respirator.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, and high temperatures, and hazards associated with moving machines.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. PPE provided as needed.
