~ Mohonk Preserve is one of America’s largest and most historic private, nonprofit nature preserves, protecting and managing over 8,000 acres of the Northern Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County, New York. ~

The Preserve has a century long legacy of conducting ecological research and environmental education. It offers over 75 miles of carriage roads and trails for hiking, running, biking, horseback riding, skiing, and outdoor exploration. It is the home of one of America’s premier rock-climbing destinations… and, it is through our programs and activities that the Preserve welcomes over 200,000 visitors annually who utilize the land for research, education, and recreation.

Thom Scheuer, the beloved Head Ranger of Mohonk Preserve from 1972 until his death in 1999, dedicated his work and life to protecting and maintaining the Preserve as a place for world-class outdoor enjoyment within a high-quality ecosystem. Thom’s timeless legacy is that of land stewardship that involves people in a common land ethic.

Internship Overview

The 2019 Scheuer Land Management Internship at Mohonk Preserve will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work within our Land Stewardship and Land Protection programs, where they will gain experience with:

  • Serving the public at Visitor Center & Contact Stations
  • Assisting with general land & facility management
  • Trail design and maintenance
  • Evaluating our visitor use & experiences Special Project:
    • The intern and their supervisor will design a specific management project focusing on our visitor experiences.
    • The project will include a final written deliverable (e.g. report, maps, design plan, survey, etc.), and short oral presentation summarizing the student’s experience and their specific project.

Note: Dr. Ed Reppert established this internship “to teach young land stewards to consider all parts of nature as a part of the total ecosystem, how all are related to and dependent on one another and how each relates to humankind.”

Compensation & Logistics

Duration:

  • 10 weeks (summer season; May-August) *This internship requires someone with the ability to be flexible and comfortable with varied shifts for the entire internship - duty hours will span every day of the week, including morning, evening and weekend shifts.

Location:

  • Based at Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center Ranger Station (Undercliff House), 3191 Route 44/55, Gardiner

Compensation:

  • $4,400; housing may be available – inquire if interested.
  • Preserve membership for duration of internship.

Who may apply:

  • Incoming junior and senior undergraduate college students majoring in Recreation & Tourism Management, Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Science, Land and Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or other related fields of study (graduating seniors are not eligible).
  • Ability to hike a minimum of 7 miles and provide personal gear for the day required (rain gear, appropriate clothing, hiking boots).
  • Driver’s license preferred.
