Position Overview

SMSC is currently seeking a Lead Environmental Scientist. This is a great opportunity in our Land Department. Experience with wetlands required. Preference for experience with Wetland Delineation and Fire.

Responsible for designing and supervising the programs to monitor, maintain, and restore living resources on SMSC Lands within the rules, ordinances, guidelines and policies established by the General Council, the Business Council and federal law. Manage compliance with UST, RCRA, CAA and other applicable environmental regulations.

Also provides input to the Natural Resources Manager to plan and prepare Community annual and capital budgets and grant budgeting.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and reports measurements and observations of air, water, soil, plants and animal resources to make recommendations on how best to maintain and preserve the environment
  • Develops plans for conservation, such as conservation cropping systems, woodland management, pasture planning and engineering systems. Plans soil management practices, such as crop rotation, reforestation, permanent vegetation, contour plowing, or terracing, to maintain soil and conserve water.
  • Analyzes results of investigations to determine measures needed to maintain or restore proper resource management
  • Discusses conservation plans, problems, and alternative solutions with land users, applying knowledge of biology, soil science, forestry, and agricultural sciences
  • Computes cost estimates of different conservation practices based on needs of land users, maintenance requirements and life expectancy of practices
  • Computes design specification for implementation of conservation practices, using survey and field information technical guides, engineering manuals, and best professional judgment
  • Participates in the hiring process and completes performance management and supervisory actions as needed
  • Supervises management of hazardous wastes generated by community members and SMSC enterprises. Bachelor's of Science degree in natural science or related field

Qualifications

  • Wetland Delineation Certification
  • Wild Fire Certification
  • Certified Professional Wetland Scientist
  • Completed 40 hour hazardous material handling course
  • 6 years of related work experience which includes two years in a management position
  • Extensive knowledge of living systems, ecosystem function and natural resources.
  • Experience in hazardous materials handling and federal regulation of petroleum products and hazardous materials
  • Valid driver's license may be required with a good driving record
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • On feet or standing 20% of shift
  • Some outdoor work - 20% - exposure to summer heat, rain, wind and winter conditions
  • Some travel - 10%
