~The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is a regional governmental agency that manages the water resources in the southern half of the state, covering 16 counties from Orlando to the Florida Keys and serving a population of 8.1 million residents. ~

It is the oldest and largest of the state's five water management districts. Created in 1949, the agency is responsible for managing and protecting water resources of South Florida by balancing and improving flood control, water supply, water quality and natural systems.

A key initiative is the restoration of America's Everglades - the largest environmental restoration project in the nation's history. The District is also working to improve the Kissimmee River and its floodplain, Lake Okeechobee and South Florida's coastal estuaries. 

Position Overview

This practitioner level land management position, Land Management Assistant Senior, is responsible for performing land management functions administered by the Land Stewardship Section and performs a variety of duties to assure District-owned lands are properly managed for recreational and ecological purposes. This position will report to the Homestead Field Station located in Miami-Dade County.

Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for performing land management activities including the planning and monitoring of exotic plant control contracts;
  • Installing prescribe burn lines and planning and participating in prescribe burns to improve plant diversity and habitat conditions; and
  • Preparing Statements of Work for various contracted activities including habitat restoration projects, maintenance activities, debris removal, and mechanical vegetations control. 

Qualifications

Employment Guidelines:

  • Typically has an associate’s degree in biology, ecology, wildlife, or a related natural science discipline and 4+ years of related experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within the field of natural resource management.

Licenses:

  • Valid State of Florida Driver’s License; and
  • Possession or ability to acquire a State of Florida pesticide applicators license and State of Florida prescribed burners certification within 180 days.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • A combination of office and field work, with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas, with exposure to stinging/biting insects, snakes, and alligators. May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.
