~ Acadia Institute of Oceanography (AIO) introduces young people to the exciting world of marine science through a unique hands-on curriculum that combines biological, physical and chemical oceanography with field, classroom, offshore, and laboratory work. ~

Every summer more than 200 young people attend AIO from all over the United States and around the world. Students attend individual sessions limited to 44 students and spend two exciting weeks working together with our experienced staff.

AIO is based in the picturesque village of Seal Harbor on the southern end of Mount Desert Island, Maine. It is three blocks from the beach and docks, and just across the street from the boundary of Acadia National Park.

Position Overview

A rare opportunity to work on beautiful Mt. Desert Island near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The Acadia Institute of Oceanography seeks to recruit a teaching staff member to work with our bright 10-19 year olds. One-week and two-week programs.  

Responsibilities

  • Teach at the shore, on board boat and in the lab working closely with other staff members to implement lessons.
  • Hiking, whale watching and working with great kids and staff are the perks of the job.  
  • Lead academic and recreational activities.
  • Participate in support duties such as dishes, clean up, etc.

Qualifications

  • Seeking applicant with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in science related field and previous marine science teaching experience with kids. 
  • Field teaching a plus. 
  • Flexibility and a positive attitude are a must.  
  • Must be able to drive or learn to drive a 15-passenger van which requires valid, clean driver's license.

Compensation

  • $380 per week plus room and board.
  • Season runs from June 23-August 23. 
  • Pre-season set up: June 18-22. 
  • Housing will alternate between dorm with students and rooming with other staff.
