Description

~ Three Rivers Land Trust's (3RLT) mission is to build stronger and healthier communities through the conservation of wild and working landscapes, and our purpose is to maintain, support and enhance the working landscape of farms and forest and such valued natural resources as lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, historic sites, scenic places and wildlife habitat, in the inland municipalities of York County, Maine, by acquiring property in fee and conservation easements, and by garnering community support. ~

3RLT was founded in 2000 by a small group of citizens and since then has conserved around 3,000 acres of public and private land through conservation easements and fee.

What this means is that working farms and forests are protected from development so that they can continue to serve as an economic and ecological benefit to us, and the public has places for free outdoor recreation. Throughout the year, the trust holds public walks, kite flying days, and many other events. Our Open Farm Day breakfast celebrates our rural heritage, and raises awareness about such issues as local agriculture and working landscapes.

We also work to help educate the public about the importance of keeping some land undeveloped for the well-being of all, by hosting speakers on subjects ranging from wildlife preservation to mushroom farming. For the last three summers, we have spent a morning with the Lebanon summer camp teaching kids about trees, wildlife, and aquatic macro-invertebrates. We have recently implemented an educational series for fifth graders that includes two classroom-programs on ecology and two field trips. We hope to replicate this in other schools.

3RLT is an accredited land trust and is currently primarily an all-volunteer organization. Many of the current board members founded the organization and continue to contribute tremendous time and effort to the organization. 3RLT’s service area encompasses the towns of Lebanon, Acton, Shapleigh, Alfred, and Sanford.
