~ The 518-acre Jay C. Hormel Nature Center preserve was established in 1971 and is located in western Mower County within the city limits of Austin. ~

The Nature Center features restored and remnant prairie, hardwood forest, wetlands, and meandering streams. As you hike the ten miles of trail, you may see deer, mink, raccoons, salamanders, birds, and other native wildlife.

  • School Programs: Hands-on structured environmental education programs are offered to all ages with an emphasis on preschool through 7th grade.
  • Bus Tours: Fun, interactive educational programs developed for all ages; includes seasonal offerings such as maple syruping and apple cidering.
  • Interpretive Center: Features an exhibit display area with live animals, touch tables, mounted animals, nature games, preschool play area, and a nature library.

Position Overview

  • Jay C. Hormel Nature Center is seeking a one-year Intern Teacher/Naturalist (must be able to begin January 2, 2019).

Responsibilities

  • Teach environmental, conservation, and outdoor education to all ages with a primary emphasis on children preschool through 7th grade.
  • Welcome visitors.
  • Feed and handle critters.
  • Present radio programs.
  • Write press releases.
  • Participate in major events such as the summer Water Festival, Thanksgiving Feast, Halloween Warm-Up, and summer adventure programs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years, preferred four years, college study in natural resources, biology, or environmental education.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills and a willingness to work flexible hours. 
  • Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a background investigation.

Compensation

  • 40 hours per week at $13.00 an hour.
  • The workweek will include Saturdays or Sundays. Interns receive public employment retirement and are eligible for health insurance benefits.
  • Time accumulated over 40 hours per week can be used as paid vacation.
