Position Overview

The Environmental Specialist position is responsible for providing facility wide coordination in all environmental arenas including air, water, and waste program management as well as assisting in compliance strategies for these programs. This position will also be one of the facility interfaces with local, state and federal agencies as well as customers with regard to sustainable operations, and environmental regulations. Coordination of the facility environmental data management and processes, program development and implementation.  

Responsibilities

  • (35%) Provide coordination and assist plant operations in environmental compliance by ensuring proper record keeping of our requirements; Responsible for reporting obligations as required by local, state, federal and corporate requirements
  • (25%) Develop, maintain, and monitor compliance tools at the facility for environmental compliance and communicate and implement environmental requirements/regulations for the facility to support plant operations and the corporation
  • (15%) Train plant personnel on Environmental subjects and perform internal assessments of environmental compliance systems
  • (15%) Implement and champion existing programs and ISO standards and help support Corn Milling employee’s understanding of them
  • (5%) Promote Cargill through involvement in community activities and professional organizations 
  • (5%) Assist in any other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 3 years of operations experience in an industrial setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with environmental regulations
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations such as, but not limited to, process safety management, process hazard analysis, and hazard recognition/control
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Individual must be able to build strong relationships with both internal and external customers and participate effectively on cross-functional teams
  • Ability to effectively interact throughout all levels and functions of the organization and with outside agencies
  • Ability to be on-call outside normal business hours to assist when needed
  • Ability to travel 15% - 25%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental science, biology, or chemistry
  • Understanding of basic reliability concepts
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Implementation of ISO 14000
  • Negotiations experience with regulatory agencies
  • Process Safety Management (PSM)  and Risk Management Program (RMP) experience
  • Experience with facility response plans (FRP)
