Description

~ Form Energy is a small team of passionate people committed to helping the world transition to renewable energy with technology. ~

We are developing a new class of ultra-low cost, long duration energy storage systems to make renewable energy available even when the sun sets, or the wind stops blowing. Form’s technology has the potential to transform the electric grid by making renewable energy dispatchable year-round. The company’s core technology was invented at MIT and is supported by category leading investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, The Engine, and Prelude Ventures. Our team members are active learners who like working on tough technology problems that can only be solved with a combination of technical innovation and hard work. We are looking for world-class people to help us win.

Position Overview

This is an opportunity to have a direct and daily impact in an exciting energy technology startup. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will have a hands-on background in mechanical design and fabrication and experience working in cross-functional teams. You will spearhead the design of a fully integrated long-duration energy storage system based on a novel electrochemical platform, working closely with a cross-functional team of chemical, materials, and mechanical engineers. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of custom test stands for validation and testing to accelerate the development of long-duration energy storage systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a cross-functional team to a fully defined concept design for a long-duration energy storage system
  • Develop functional requirements in close collaboration with component and functional subject matter experts
  • Propose and de-risk architecture design concepts
  • Integrate design for manufacturing into the design process
  • Interface with external stakeholders
  • Design, build, and qualify new test vehicles and test stands to accelerate the development of novel long-duration energy storage systems
  • Design, build, and debug test stands that expand our testing capability and/or which enable high-throughput testing
  • Support the analysis of test data to enable data-based decision making
  • Build long-lasting, reliable relationships with external vendors and contractors
  • Aid in sourcing capital equipment and in developing facility requirements and capabilities to meet the company’s growing needs

Qualifications

What we're looking for:

  • BS required (MS preferred) in Mechanical Engineering or similar field
  • 5-7 years of experience in electromechanical design
  • Direct experience in product development within an early stage environment
  • Prior experience in Energy Storage, Battery Systems, Renewable Energy, Utility, or other related industry experience a plus
  • Machining/fabrication experience a plus
  • Experience in high-throughput data analysis using a scientific programming language (i.e., Python, MATLAB) also a plus

Characteristics:

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills a must!
  • Hands-on approach to engineering problem solving
  • Data-driven decision maker
  • Flexible working style: Can “wear many hats” and jump quickly between projects
  • Able to work well in cross-disciplinary project teams and deliver results
  • Enjoys the fast paced, results driven environment of a startup
  • Drives projects to completion
  • High attention to detail
