HCA accomplishes its goals through collaboration with a network of public and private organizations and agencies that share its goals, values, and objectives, and through public outreach and education.

Position Overview

Heartland Conservation Alliance is seeking a full-time Land Trust Coordinator. The successful candidate will join our team working to advance our mission, core values, and strategic initiatives. Our mission is working collaboratively in the Kansas City Metro to protect our region’s natural resources for the benefit of all community members. The Coordinator works with the Director, Board, volunteers, Alliance members and other staff to develop, plan, implement, evaluate, and improve conservation projects.

The Land Trust Coordinator works under the guidance of the Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors and its committees. Primary duties include the facilitation and implementation of programs that enable Heartland Conservation Alliance to accomplish its mission.

These programs include (1) the permanent legal protection of land, (2) proper stewardship of land and conservation easements held, (3) public outreach and education on HCA’s programs and goals, (4) building organizational capacity to accomplish program goals, (5) developing and implementing strategic plans for the future, (6) building and maintaining effective partnerships with local governments, service groups, conservation organizations, and related state and federal agencies, and (7) budgeting and reporting for assigned programs and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Be a contributing member of a our highly motivated and effective professional work team.
  • Ensure that all work follows Land Trust Alliance standards and practices.
  • Work with staff and volunteers to facilitate the implementation of land protection and stewardship programs, including leadership, supervision, and personal efforts when necessary. Provide leadership and facilitation in serving on team of conservation, land protection and stewardship specialists.
  • Lead regular Work Group and project meetings related to assigned projects.
  • Conduct education and outreach as determined by assigned projects.
  • Work with staff and volunteers to support successful fundraising, membership recruitment and retention, and capacity building activities.
  • Work with staff and board to conduct necessary business functions, including preparation of financial reports, maps, development of policies and strategic plans.
  • Work with staff and volunteers to develop effective partnerships with local, state, and federal conservation agencies; local service and conservation groups; and other land trusts.
  • Provide technical analysis and support related to natural resources management, land conservation, public policy, funding, and other related topics. This includes obtaining, analyzing, and synthesizing data; reviewing technical plans, studies, and reports and providing analysis and recommendations.
  • Manage grants related to assigned projects, including track expenses, in-kind services and manage project budgets, under the Executive Director’s supervision.
  • Manage routine administrative duties and maintain project records of assigned projects, under the supervision of the Executive Director. This includes maintaining and managing data and information.

Qualifications

  • Demonstration of a strong personal interest in, and conviction to, the conservation of land and natural resources.
  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental science, business administration, or related field, and five years of professional experience in a related field.
  • Significant experience and familiarity with land protection and stewardship methods, tools, and practices. Experience with land purchases and ownership responsibilities; the drafting, obtaining, and enforcement of conservation easements; and land management and restoration approaches. A familiarity with Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills. The ability to speak effectively in public, work with the media, and interact well with a wide variety of people.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to successfully apply for grants.
  • Proficient with modern computer applications, including word processing, data storage and manipulation, development of visual presentations, and Internet research and communications.
  • The ability to effectively lead, motivate, and work with a diverse staff and volunteers. The ability to act in a professional and courteous manner while at work and at all times in the community.

Working Conditions:

  • Duties are performed in the office and the field.
  • Travel is required to various locations in the region for meetings, conferences, workshops, and speaking engagements.
  • Evening and weekend work is occasionally required.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience; range $38,000-$40,000
