Assistant Horticulturist

Our gardens and Discovery Center host over 140,000 guests annually. Horticulture at the Nature Center is a vital component of a positive guest experience and the department strives to inspire visitors by increasing their connection to the natural world. Gardens include: extensive native plant gardens, butterfly gardens, and a vegetable garden. 

Position Overview

The Chattahoochee Nature Center is currently seeking an Assistant Horticulturist.

Responsibilities

• Maintain outdoor garden spaces to the highest standards in all aspects of horticultural care including: planting, irrigation, mulching, pruning, and weeding. Specific garden areas will be assigned based on candidate’s strengths and experience.
• Assist Horticulture staff in these aspects in other garden areas.
• Possess working knowledge of weed identification, pruning techniques, and plant care.
• Work with Horticultural staff in propagation for plant sales, grounds beautification, and conservation in situ and ex situ.
• Work with volunteer individuals, interns, and groups.
• Follow protocols in greenhouse space including general maintenance and pest control.
• Periodic weekend and holiday work will be required as assigned; mandatory weekend work with Operations Department occurs on a rotational basis.
• Ability to work both individually and as a part of a team.

Skills/Training/Experience Requirements:

• Minimum of high school diploma and 2 years working in the horticultural field required.
• Work in conservation, botanical, or public gardens preferred. Degree or certificates in horticultural studies
  preferred.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

• This position is physically demanding.
• Carrying bags of soil, transferring mulch, planting, and heavy lifting are all regular aspects of this position.
• Work is primarily outdoors, therefore, candidate must also have ability to work in a variety of conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
