~ The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Forestry is one of the world’s leading academic institutions in forestry, conducting both national and international research, and providing undergraduate education in six degree programs: Urban Forestry, Forestry, Natural Resources Conservation, Forest Science, and Wood Science. ~

The Bachelor of Urban Forestry (BUF) program, which was launched in 2015, embraces an interdisciplinary approach across ecological, socio-cultural, and economic issues in both urban and peri-urban settings. The Faculty also intends to launch a new Master in Urban Forestry Leadership in fall 2019. Urban forestry education and research provides opportunities for collaboration with other faculties and departments at UBC, including the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, the Sauder School of Business, and the School of Community and Regional Planning. The urban forestry program at UBC benefits from its location in Vancouver, a city with the vision to become the world’s greenest.

Position Overview

The Department of Forest Resources Management at the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia  invites applications for up to two full-time tenure-stream positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of urban forestry. The successful applicant is expected to play a key role in undergraduate and graduate teaching in different aspects of urban forestry, as well as supervising graduate students and conducting research in the field of urban forestry.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate(s) will play a leading role in teaching and program development at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; therefore, evidence of high-quality post-secondary teaching is desirable, and experience with course development is considered an additional strength.
  • Candidates are expected to contribute to the teaching and supervision of graduate students in urban forestry.
  • Also, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Faculty’s strategic goals and development.

Qualifications

  • Candidates for this position must have a PhD in urban forestry, landscape architecture, landscape planning, urban ecology, arboriculture, forestry, or in a related field, with the topic of their doctoral study dealing with aspects of the planning, design, management, or use of urban green spaces and vegetation.
  • The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of teaching and research in urban forestry.
  • Candidates should be comfortable working with interdisciplinary perspectives, within an international research and teaching context, and applying their knowledge to urban forestry and related planning, policy, design and management domains.
  • The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a strong potential for scientific publishing and in securing research grants.

The individual should have interest and experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • The planning and management of forests, parks, trees, and other green spaces in urban areas.
  • Landscape planning and design approaches, specifically as applied to urban areas.
  • The provision of ecosystem services and benefits by urban vegetation.
