~ The Nursery Coop’s mission is to develop and disseminate cultural, biological, and chemical technologies for the economical production and utilization of forest-tree seedlings in the southern U.S. ~ 

The University provides instruction in approximately 70 academic departments and maintains graduate research and public service programs of a broad scope. The University is located in the city of Auburn in east-central Alabama near the metropolitan areas of Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama, and Columbus and Atlanta, Georgia.

Position Overview

The Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences is seeking an Assistant Research Professor with a specialty in Forest Seedling Production and Regeneration at its Auburn, Alabama campus. This position will be committed to research associated with the Auburn University Southern Forest Nursery Management Cooperative.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-going Forestry and Wildlife Sciences related research in a technology transfer program involving industry, state, and private forest tree bareroot and container seedling nurseries.
  • Actively engage in research, collection and statistical analysis of data, development of experimental designs, and protocols that address the Southern Forest Nursery Management Cooperative (SFNMC) priorities, including methyl bromide alternatives, fertility trials, fungicidal tests, seedling cultural trials, weed control, biological treatments.
  • Write research reports, technical notes, and newsletter articles for Nursery Coop members.
  • Present at Nursery Coop meetings and at relevant regional or national events.
  • Travel to nursery field sites across the southeastern U.S. to install experiments, collect data, and serve as a liaison with Nursery Coop members in a limited diagnostic capacity.
  • Work with the EPA, USDA, and APHIS to address the needs of Coop members with respect to pesticide issues.
  • Teach senior or graduate level course in Forest Regeneration and Seedling Production within the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences.
  • Up to 20% domestic travel.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Forestry, Horticulture, Agronomy or closely related field.
  • 2 years of experience, Postdoctoral Fellow or Researcher in same, similar, including Research Scientist position.
  • Similar experience must be Forest Seedling Production and Regeneration focused.
  • 2 years of experience with PCR techniques, fertility trials, fungicidal tests, weed control, and biological treatments (experience may be concurrent).
  • Candidates selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of appointment and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
