~ The mission of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC or Department) is to ensure that Montana's land and water resources provide benefits for present and future generations. ~

Land Offices are responsible for integrating and implementing programs for both the Forestry and Trust Land Management Divisions. The Forestry Division plans and implements forestry and fire management programs through an extensive network of staff in field offices located throughout the State. Division functions include: fire & aviation management, forestry assistance, business management, and policy, planning and outreach.

The Trust Land Management Division administers and manages the state trust timber, surface, and mineral resources for the benefit of the common schools and the other endowed institutions in Montana. Division functions include: Agriculture and Grazing Management, Forest Management, Minerals Management, and Real Estate Management. Position Overview

Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation seeks a Hydrologist. This position serves as a Soil and Watershed Resource Specialist in the Southwestern Land Office of the Trust Lands Division in the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.

Responsibilities

  • The incumbent provides professional hydrology and soils management expertise to SWLO Unit staff and Land Office staff in support of forest management projects, grazing management projects and other projects as assigned.
  • The incumbent applies the theories, concepts, principles, and practices of forest hydrology and soils in analyzing the direct effects of forest management on water quality, water quantity, fish habitat, and forest soils, as well as cumulative effects at a watershed or landscape level.
  • Soil and Watershed Resource Specialist recommends actions and mitigations that provide adequate protections soil, water, fisheries resources.
  • The position reports to the Area Silviculturist and does not directly supervise other agency personnel.

Qualifications

  • Requires BS in hydrology or forest hydrology or closely related file plus 1 to 2 years work experience.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • A valid driver's license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.
  • 10% travel time with occasional overnight travel.
  • Copies of transcripts will be accepted at this time.

  • Describe your writing skills and how you have used this skill in writing technical reports, watershed plans, Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements. You may attach an example.
  • Describe what role forest management should play in shaping the future of Montana’s trust land forests in the next 50 years.
