Wilderness Stewardship Intern, local Bay Area candidates only

~ Student Conservation Association's (SCA) mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of the environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. ~

Every year we motivate and deploy thousands of young people who care passionately about improving their natural world. We put them to work in our parks and public lands and urban green spaces to make improvements and learn conservation and sustainability practices. We teach them how to plan, enact, and lead, all while making a tangible impact in conservation.

Position Overview

The California Wilderness Coalition wishes to engage a Wilderness Stewardship Intern, for six months beginning on or around May 1, 2018 and concluding on or around October 31, 2018. This position is for local only candidates in the Bay Area. The Intern will work out of the CWC’s Oakland office. 

• Location Description: Several designated wilderness areas and or national monuments in California.
• Main Area of Focus: Natural Resources Mgmt.

Responsibilities

• The Intern will be responsible for implementing a series of wilderness stewardship projects in selected designated or proposed wilderness areas.  
• As areas are selected for such projects by the CWC, the Stewardship Intern will be responsible for recruiting and organizing volunteers, coordinating with agency staff on project design, tool needs, and all project logistics. 
• The Intern will not supervise volunteers in the field during the projects. 
• Projects will consist of a variety of tasks, including boundary signing, installing trailhead kiosks, trail maintenance, installing OHV trail barriers, and other projects benefiting wilderness character.

Qualifications

• Resource Management degree minor or extensive experience.
• Backpacking competent without supervision.
• Hand Tools competent without supervision.
• Public Speaking competent without supervision.
