What We Do:

The Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM) is a nonprofit educational and advocacy organization, supported by a combination of individual and foundation philanthropy, dues from citizens and organization members, and proceeds from special events.

We focus our resources on the state level, where we believe that our knowledge, expertise and reputation allow us to have the strongest impact. We also network and collaborate with a variety of leaders in business and government as well with other environmental nonprofits to achieve effective results.

Position Overview

The Director of Corporate Engagement will grow the size, influence and impact of ELM’s Corporate Council. S/he will also substantially advance ELM’s ability to ‘Make the Business Case’ for great environmental policy. Working closely with ELM’s President, Staff and Board Corporate Engagement Committee, the Director has the opportunity to build a powerful and uncommon alliance among Council Members. The ELM Corporate Council is currently a body of 23 companies either headquartered in or with a substantial presence in Massachusetts.

Responsibilities

Strategic development:

  • Refine and enhance the ELM Corporate Council value proposition, together with board and staff.
  • Identify leading company prospects and refine the strategy for inviting these firms to join.
  • Grow to 30 members by 12/18 and 40 members by 12/19. 
  • Develop (or oversee the development of) excellent collateral materials for web and print.

Advocacy:

  • Map the opportunities for ELM’s Corporate Council members to engage in state policy development and advance environmental policies and priorities 
  • Collaborate with ELM’s Legislative Director, Policy Team and Action Fund staff to refine a clear strategy for raising corporate voices, particularly in priority legislative districts and with regard to prioritized legislation. 
  • Lead on corporate advocacy engagements. 
  • Evaluate opportunities like an ‘ELM Corporate Fellows Program’ or other initiatives.
  • Raise individual business voices to advance policy and improve the sustainability of the companies where they work.

Corporate Sustainability:

  • Identify and advance opportunities to improve networking and peer-to-peer learning between ELM CC Member companies. 
  • Prepare and circulate exemplary best practices among members. 
  • Accelerate their adoption of leading corporate sustainability practices.

Coalition building:

  • Identify and pursue strategic partnerships with other organizations that advance the mission of elevating pro-environment business voices.

Fundraising:

  • Many foundations and donors also recognize that corporate voices will be key to advancing great energy and environmental policy.
  • Together with ELM’s President and Development team, build these donor relationships and cultivate lasting partnerships to advance this work. 
  • Lead or contribute to grant writing as needed.

Communications:

  • Collaborate with ELM’s Communications staff to highlight corporate sustainability leadership.
  • Support and advise on the creation and delivery of timely and compelling communication in web, print and social media.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communicator. Poised. Strategic. Personable. Uses good judgment and discretion. Self-starter.
  • S/he will see the many links between a strong economy and strong environment and be able to navigate both spheres of environmental advocacy and corporate partnership.
  • Some combination of deep experience with government relations, corporate sustainability and/or environmental advocacy would be essential.
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • An MBA is a plus.
  • Some combination of fundraising, business development, communication, strategic planning, grant management experience a plus. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
