January: Biggest Sustainability Conference in Middle East

Signaling the strengthening connection between energy and water supplies, a week long event in the Middle East will focus on solutions to that.

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, taking place January 13-17, will focus on the energy-water nexus – how much water it takes to produce the huge amounts of energy the world will demand going forward, and whether there will be enough to go around.

It’s the largest gathering on sustainability in the Middle East to date.

By 2025, 40% of the world’s human population is expected to live in water-scarce regions. And even now, 27% of people living in cities do not have water piped into their homes.  70% of the world’s fresh water resources is used for agriculture and irrigation.

The conference is expected to host 30,000 people from 150 countries. It’s actually a series of conferences that have the goal of accelerating global adoption of renewable energy; addressing water challenges in arid regions and the nexus between water and energy.

The Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), January 13 – 14; the sixth annual World Future Energy Summit, January 15 – 17; the International Water Summit  January, 15 – 17; and the International Renewable Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi, January 15 – 17.

The area is home to Masdar City, which is in the process of building one of the world’s most sustainable cities.
