Campbell Soup, Darden Restaurants Install Solar Systems

Campbell Soup (NYSE:CPB) has a 9.8 MW solar array under construction at its Napoleon, Ohio manufacturing plant. When it’s finished this year, it will supply 15% of the plant’s electricity.

Cambell’s is buying all the electricity from the 60-acre project, which is being installed by BNB Renewable Energy Holdings and Enfinity America Corp. FirstEnergy Solutions (Akron, Ohio) will purchase the Solar Renewable Energy Credits from the project. SunPower (Nasdaq: SPRWA) is supplying the solar panels.

This is the first of many joint projects for Enfinity and BNB. Enfinity will arrange project financing co-manage the installation, contracts and future operations with BNB.

"The construction of this facility marks a turning point towards larger on-site renewable generation in the USA," says Matthew Baird, a principal and founder of BNB.

Enfinity’s ability to quickly deploy capital will allow BNB to accelerate its pace of development.

Darden Restaurants in Florida

Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI), the world’s largest full-service restaurant company, will soon begin installation of a 1.1 megawatt (MW) rooftop solar system at its Restaurant Support Center in Orlando.

It’s not a huge project, but it will be the largest private solar array in Florida, generating 15%-20% of its electricity. And it will be built on the state’s largest building LEED-Gold green building for New Construction, which opened in 2009.

The building’s energy efficient features include high-performance windows; a U-shaped floor plan that limits western exposure; lighting motion sensors; a daylight harvesting system that monitors natural light levels and automatically dims artificial lighting as appropriate; and a recycling system for water.

Darden owns and operates more than 1,900 restaurants, including chains like Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse, and generates more than $7.5 billion in annual sales.
