Scientists Complete Global Census of Marine Life

Scientist have completed a $650 million, ten-year project to document global ocean life.

The Census of Marine Life includes nearly 30 million observations by 2,700 scientists from 80 nations, who spent a combined 9,000 days at sea.

The project includes a free online database with information on 120,000 species of marine life.

Scientists discovered an even greater diversity of species than expected, according to an MSNBC report, which also notes that ocean biodiversity is under increasing threat, as changes in the ocean ecosystem–caused by events like the Gulf oil spill, overfishing or clmate change–ripple out through the ecological web.
