Phase-Out of Incandescent Light Bulbs Means Loss of U.S. Jobs

The phase-out of traditional, incandescent light bulbs is considered a huge step for reducing energy consumption, but it is also represents the loss of additional manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

According to a recent Washington Post article, high-efficiency CFL replacement bulbs are all made oversees, particularly in China. The last GE factory making incandescents in the U.S. is closing this month with no plans to update the Virginia facility for new, greener technology. As a result, about 200 workers are expected to lose their jobs.

One of China’s leading manufacturers of CFLs wants to begin manufacturing in the U.S., but has been unable to get $12.5 million in government funding for the project.
