Joint Venture to Produce Fuel from Waste Biomass

Pacific Renewable Fuels (Sacramento, California) and Red Lion Bio-Energy (Toledo, Ohio) have formed Synterra Fuels, a joint venture, to focus on refining synthetic diesel fuel and generating electricity from waste biomass.

"Red Lion Bio-Energy and Pacific Renewable Fuels have invested many years and significant resources in the development of next-generation thermochemical and catalytic conversion technologies," said Alex Johnson, who will serve as CEO of Synterra Fuels. "The marriage of our two technology platforms is an ideal fit."

Synterra will operate a fully integrated pilot biorefinery at the University of Toledo and manufacturing operations will be focused in California and Ohio. "One of our goals is to capitalize on the assets in Northwest Ohio," said Doug Struble, who will serve as COO of Synterra Fuels. "With the shrinking manufacturing base in the state, there are plenty of qualified people already in Northwest Ohio that we will leverage for green manufacturing jobs."

Several commercial plants are in the planning stages, including one in Gridley, California. "As part of the Gridley Biofuels Project, Pacific Renewable Fuels and Red Lion Bio-Energy were chosen from a comprehensive review of hundreds of technologies to further develop and validate their technologies under a project funded by the Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the California Energy Commission," reported Greg Tamblyn, Executive Director of the Renewable Energy Institute International (REII).
