Novartis Adds 1MW Solar Array

Pharmaceutical firm Novartis (NYSE: NVS) announced a 1 MW solar array has been completed near its Vacaville biopharmaceutical site.

The $7 million, five acre solar systems will supply 20% of electricity for the manufacturing plant.

"This dedication signals our continued commitment to the environment and to initiatives like the Kyoto Protocol, the US EPA Climate Leaders Program and our own US Energy program," said Robert Pelzer, CEO.

Novartis has solar systems at five other sites. The company has a goal of cutting GHG emissions 5% below 1990 levels by 2012.

Novartis is an example of a conventional company that’s leading on green initiatives, and deserves a place in a green investor’s portfolio. Novartis was on Progressive Investor’s 2008 SB20 List: The World’s Top Sustainable Stocks.
