McDonald's Highlights Sustainable Farming in Europe

McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) Europe has launched a three-year project in
conjunction with the Food Animal Initiative (FAI) to encourage sharing
of sustainable agricultural practice.

The company has selected seven European farms to showcase sustainable farming practices within its supply chain.

The company said the project aims to establish a direct dialogue
amongst progressive farmers across Europe, and to facilitate the
sharing of sustainable farming concepts across the producer network.

The initiative is an extension of the company’s Agricultural Assurance
Programme (MAAP) and the farms chosen demonstrate a high level of
compliance to the programs standards–exceeding them in many cases.

Each of the showcased farms will be the subject of case studies,
available on the Flagship Farms website (link below). Farms include
potates from Poland, beef from Ireland, tomatoes from portugal and
lettuce from Spain.

The Lakes farm in the U.K., which provides free-range eggs, has
policies supporting biodiversity  and local businesses. The company
also has planted tens of thousands of native tree species over the last
decade.

"The ultimate goal of initiatives such as Flagship Farms and
MAAP is to assure supply, maintain price stability and respond to
consumer demand for responsibly sourced, traceable produce – so that
everyone benefits – our farmers and suppliers, our business, and our
consumers," said Karl Fitz, chief supply chain officer at McDonald’s
Europe.

In April, McDonald’s agreed to preliminary steps to reduce pesticide use within its American potato supply chain, according to shareholder groups.
