GE Forms Indian JV for Hybrid Locomotives

General Electric (NYSE: GE) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd have formed a joint venture to build hybrid locomotives for Indian Railways, according to a report on domain-b.com.

A factory in Marhoura, Bhiar will manufacture 120 of the diesel-electric locomotives, with GE holding 51% of the venture, Bharat Heavy holding 23% and Indian Railways holding the remaining 26%.

The company has yet to receive the order from the railway, but GE is reportedly the only bidder for the contract to supply 1,000 diesel locomotives over 10 years.

GE Locomotive design for a hybrid locomotive employs regenerative breaking technology, similar to that used in the popular Toyota Prius hybrid. The locomotive captures the energy dissipated during braking and stores it in batteries. The energy can then be used to reduce fuel consumption by as much as 15%.

Emissions reductions can be as much as 50% compared to most freight locomotives in use today. The energy dissipated in braking a 207-ton locomotive over the course of a year is enough to power 160 American households for a year, according to the report.
