Anschutz Corp. Enters Renewable Energy With $3B Transmission Project

The Anschutz Corp., owned by Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz, on Tuesday annouced plans to enter the renewable energy industry through the development of a $3 billion transmission project for wind power, according to an Associated Press report.

The corporation, which owns a controlling interest in the Regal Entertainment Group–among others–is taking over development of a 900-mile, 3,000 megawatt (MW) transmission line to deliver power from Wyoming wind farms to Las Vegas, Southern California and Phoenix, Arizona.

The TransWest Express Project has thus far been developed by the Arizona Public Service Co., the Wyoming Infrastructure Authority and National Grid, a British utility company. The three have invested an estimated $2.8 million in preliminary planning.

Construction on the project might not begin for several years, as permitting and environmental studies have yet to take place.

Anschutz recently applied for a permit to build 1,000 wind turbines near Rawlins in the southern Wyoming, where the power line would be located.
