Missouri City Is First to Be 100% Wind Powered

A town in Missouri will be the first U.S. city to supply 100% of its electricity from wind-generated power. Rock Port, Missouri’s annual electricity demand is roughly 13 million kilowatt hours (kWh), and wind turbines built by the Wind Capital Group on municipal land within the city limits will produce approximately 16 million kWh each year–meaning the city will actually have a surplus of power.

Electricity generated from the Loess Hills facility not used by homes and businesses in Rock Port will be purchased by the Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC) for use in other communities in the state. As part of this arrangement, MJMEUC will supply Rock Port’s power needs when the wind turbines are not generating at peak capacity.

"This is a great development for the city of Rock Port and for all of America," said Tom Carnahan, President of Wind Capital Group. "By generating enough clean, renewable electricity to meet all of Rock Port’s energy needs while also generating additional revenue for their tax base, the Loess Hills facility is a shining example of the benefits of wind energy development."
