~ The Wildlife Center of Virginia is a non-profit teaching and referral hospital for native wildlife. The Center is a professionally staffed, fully equipped, 5,700-square foot hospital, research, and environmental education center located in Waynesboro, Virginia. ~

Our mission and passion is to teach the world to care about and to care for wildlife and the environment. Founded in 1982, the Wildlife Center of Virginia has provided care for more than 65,000 sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals representing over 200 species. Each year the center admits approximately 2,300 patients with the goal to release healthy animals back into their natural habitats.

Position Overview

The Receptionist/Front Desk Coordinator represents the Wildlife Center of Virginia, a leading wildlife hospital, to the general public, often serving as the first staff member to interact with individuals who contact the Center by telephone or email or who visit the Center. The Receptionist reports to the Center’s Office Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Answer telephone calls and general emails to the Center. Provide accurate, timely, informative, and compassionate information to individuals who contact the Center with questions about wildlife and wildlife-health issues.
  • Help individuals assess the appropriate course of action/treatment for dealing with an animal with a medical emergency.
  • Serve as the Center’s telephone operator, screening and transferring incoming calls to appropriate staff members.
  • Admit wild animals that are brought to the Center as patients. Take animals into the Center’s medical clinic and alert staff to medical needs.
  • Work with the individual(s) admitting or transporting the animal to collect information that will help the Center’s veterinary staff in treatment and release/relocation decisions. Respond to inquiries about the status of patients that have been admitted for treatment.
  • Enter intake information into the Center’s patient data base. Access the data base to respond to public inquiries about patients.
  • Working with the Center’s Office Manager, some general support of the Center, including ordering supplies; limited on-site retail sales [including fulfillment and inventory responsibilities]; distribution of inter-office memos, weekly updates, and meeting agenda; photocopying; back-up support for the Center’s outreach, development, and veterinary staff.
  • Other duties/responsibilities assigned by the Office Manager.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Customer service experience required.
  • Experience in a medical or hospital setting preferred.
  • Commitment to wildlife, conservation, and the environment.
  • Strong computer experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and accomplish established goals.
  • Ability to organize and advance multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be reliable, responsible, enthusiastic, unflappable, and adaptive.
  • Able to work calmly under pressure, and in a busy office environment.
  • Ability to work as a team player.
  • Professional appearance and presentation, both in person and on the telephone.
  • Flexible scheduling opportunities are possible.
  • Some weekend work required.
