~ New York Sea Grant (NYSG), a cooperative program of the State University of New York (SUNY) and Cornell University, is part of a national network of 33 university-based state sea grant programs that are administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). ~

NYSG integrates research, education and extension to promote economic vitality and environmental sustainability to coastal residents and communities of the State's marine and Great Lakes areas. 

Position Overview

Serve as the primary technical resource within the following areas: coastal processes and hazards (including impacts of climate change on coastal systems), shoreline erosion and erosion management, coastal flooding and mitigation planning, coastal structures and engineering, marine facilities design, as well as operation and management for New York Sea Grant and Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Plan and conduct extension education programs in coastal processes and hazards; develop significant new subject matter materials, tools and programs such as curricula and extension education publications, websites, and other technology based extension mechanisms. Seek, obtain, manage and administer external funding for applied research and extension activities related to subject matter areas. Keep current in area of professional expertise. Primary geographic area responsibility includes Sea Grant's Marine District (Long Island, New York City and Hudson Valley).

This position is full-time (40 hours/week) and will be located in Stony Brook, New York. This is a three-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for integrating Sea Grant Extension and University coastal processes and hazards programming initiatives in a statewide, regional, and/or national context.
  • Produce and deliver extension educational programs related to following areas: coastal processes and hazards, erosion control and management as well as coastal structures and engineering.
  • Design and teach regional in-service education programs to support the efforts of regional and county extension educators, Sea Grant specialists, volunteers, agency personnel, and industry leaders in the area of coastal resource management.
  • Provide leadership for the design, execution and analysis of educational program evaluations.
  • Identify audience and program informational needs; develop and submit proposals as well as design and conduct applied research to fulfill these needs.
  • Responsible for management of office facilities and serves as the Sea Grant Extension representative/liaison with host institution and outside vendors.
  • Occasionally collaborate with university departments and other state Sea Grant programs in planning and conducting extension staff development activities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in coastal geology, engineering or related marine science field.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in coastal processes and erosion management, shoreline engineering and structures and/or water-dependent facilities design and operation.
  • Knowledge of principles, theory, research, and educational materials in the subject matter field and knowledge of adult education methods related to the area of specialization.
  • Advanced computer skills and the ability to use computer and long distance education technologies in this area of extension programming expertise.
  • Training/certification in the use of GIS software.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop educational programs and teach adults.
  • Initiate, plan, conduct and evaluate informal and/or formal adult education programs.
  • Define, conduct, and interpret original applied research and/or demonstration projects.
  • Lead and effectively participate in professional team efforts.
  • Relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders, and targeted audiences.
  • Communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels.
  • In order to be considered for an appointment as a Senior Extension Associate, minimum requirement include a Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience, however, a PhD is preferred.
