Description

~ Based in Boulder, CO, Protect Our Winters (POW) is a nonprofit that engages and mobilizes the outdoor sports community to lead the fight against climate change through educational initiatives, political advocacy, and community-based activism. ~

Founded by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones in 2007, POW partners with businesses, athletes, and the outdoor community to harness the collective power of the outdoor industry and take meaningful action against climate change.

The Opportunity

For ten years, POW has used the passion, profile and reach of the outdoor industry to expand a social movement around climate change. Now, as we grow, we are seeking a new Executive Director to lead us to the next level.

Reporting to POW’s Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational oversight of our growing nonprofit and will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization.

Our ideal candidate will be as passionate about play as about work; won’t be afraid to put in long hours, but will be equally willing to disappear at lunch for a two-hour hike. We're looking for someone who is awed not by the famous athletes and CEOs we work with, but by the natural world and the passion of the common men and women of the outdoor community.

Candidates must be able to carve a turn in crud, place trad gear in the mountains, surf a slightly overhead break, roll a kayak, or aspire to one or all of the above. If you're a hero and a visionary, that's a bonus. But we're most interested in a leader dedicated to the hard, messy, and humbling work of saving civilization from the impacts of climate change. In return, we offer a competitive salary and benefits and a chance to unite your passion with your work.

Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience in the nonprofit or corporate sector, nonprofit managerial experience preferred
  • Budgeting, financial and personnel management expertise
  • Strategy development
  • Excellent public speaking and writing skills
  • Ability to build collaborative teams (within POW and among corporate and nonprofit partners)
  • Fundraising and grant-proposal writing and oversight skills
  • Graduate degree preferred but not essential
  • Background in climate science and policy preferred
  • Familiarity with the outdoor recreation community
  • Ability to inspire staff, partners, and community
