Description

~ For the past 25 years, the Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center (CSERC) has effectively served as the foremost environmental defender of more than 2,000,000 acres of forests, rivers, lakes, wetlands, roadless areas, old growth groves, scenic oak woodlands, and other precious areas within the Northern Yosemite region of the Central Sierra Nevada. ~

Each year we deal with clearcutting, new road construction, huge new development projects, the spraying of herbicides, destruction of wildlife habitat, and other threats to wild places and open space.

Position Overview

The Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center (CSERC) is a non-profit environmental organization working to protect water, wildlife, and wild places of the Northern Yosemite region.

The CSERC office is located in Twain Harte, California, in a conifer forest at 4,000’ elevation.

Responsibilities

Program of work – The CSERC staff engages in a broad range of efforts. The selected candidate will perform varied work, including:

  • Office tasks such as reviewing CEQA/NEPA documents, doing member mailings, maintaining database entries, and updating the website.
  • Advocacy work, including attending meetings, organizing volunteers, and social media.
  • Watchdog monitoring and forest fieldwork, such as water quality sampling, monitoring meadows, setting up cameras to detect rare wildlife, and participating in restoration projects.
  • Fieldwork is a priority in the summer/fall field season, with office work dominating the rest of the year.

Qualifications

  • This job announcement is open to applicants with either of two areas of expertise and skills.
  • Those with experience doing forest fieldwork, wildlife surveys, or other science-based resource work may be a match for CSERC’s needs.
  • Those with administrative or associate director type experience with a non-profit doing grant writing, engagement in land planning, fundraising, social media, or organizing may be a match based on those skills.
  • Applicants should have at least 2 years of experience tied to work with natural resources, conservation, or with a non-profit organization.
  • All applicants should also be capable of hiking and working in rugged terrain.
  • Applicants who now reside in the local region will be given preference.

Compensation: Salary will be based upon education and experience. A salary estimate for you personally can be discussed with CSERC’s executive director if you become one of the candidates invited for interviews. As a non-profit, CSERC cannot fully match salaries available in government agencies or the private sector, but the Center’s flexible work schedule and the opportunity to search for wildlife, sample water quality in streams, or do other enjoyable fieldwork all adds to the compensation of working at the Center. CSERC provides three weeks paid leave, 11 holidays, basic medical coverage, and retirement contributions. CSERC does not provide dental or optometry coverage.
