~ Round River Conservation Studies is an ecological research and education organization whose goal is the formulation and implementation of conservation strategies that conserve and restore wildness. ~

We recognize that flourishing wildlife, wildness and wild places are important in and of themselves and that sustainable conservation must be tied to the communities most dependent upon these landscapes.

Position Overview

Round River is seeking to hire a scientist to support a diversity of research projects. This person will assist in developing technical products to support international conservation research including cultural and ecological assessments to inform land-use planning, wildlife population and habitat conservation initiatives, and climate vulnerability assessments of lands, waters and associated fish and wildlife species.

Many of these projects are with indigenous partners internationally including in northwest Canada and southern Africa. Position is full-time through 2018, with extension into permanent possible.

Qualifications

Preferred skills and experience:

  • While any one person may not have all the skills listed below, we will be looking for a scientist who has a diversity of these and the ability and interest to acquire new skills in the following areas:
  • Working with large spatial and non-spatial ecological data to provide data management, summary information and statistical analyses.
  • Experience and skill using ArcGIS for spatial data management and analyses.
  • Comfortable and familiar with a diversity of multi-variate statistical procedures and experience using R for data management, modeling, analyses and syntheses.
  • Experience working with climate model data, analyses; climate vulnerability assessments.
  • Searching and synthesizing technical academic and grey literature.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.

Required Professional Qualities:

  • A MS or PhD in conservation biology or a related natural resources or environmental studies field with a strong science foundation is required; at least 3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Commitment to the mission of Round River Conservation Studies and a passion for applying rigorous scientific approaches to provide insights into conservation concerns and provide viable and robust conservation solutions.
  • Strong organization skills and demonstrated ability to manage large, dynamic workload and prioritize projects to meet deadlines, time allocations and project needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to think analytically and creatively to problem-solve.
  • Commitment to stay current in the conservation science field and a desire to advance professional skills and capacities that support the mission of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within teams, collaborate with diverse partners and embrace a diversity of roles as appropriate for the project.
  • Willingness to occasionally work long or irregular hours and ability to handle occasional high pressure situations to meet project deadlines or expectations.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods.
  • Interest and ability to teach undergraduate students in field settings.
