Position Overview
The Assistant or Associate Professor of Great Plains Forestry will contribute to the integrated research and teaching land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy.
Responsibilities
- The successful candidate for this position is expected to develop a high-impact, nationally and internationally recognized research and teaching program in the management and ecology of forests of the Great Plains.
- Potential research (0.60 FTE) areas include:
- Ecosystem services of woody plants in rural, urban, or riparian landscapes.
- Ecology and management of urban and community forests.
- The use of shelterbelts, riparian buffers, silvipastoral systems, and other agroforestry practices in sustainable agricultural landscapes.
- Prevention and/or mitigation of environmental stresses to forest ecosystems such as fire, insects, diseases, drought, or climate change.
- The incumbent will collaborate with faculty and staff in SNR, the Nebraska Forest Service (NFS) and other units in IANR, as well as partners including the USDA National Agroforestry Center, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and the Arbor Day Foundation to strengthen research and educational programming.
- The incumbent may be asked to coordinate and/or assist forestry-related research on IANR’s five forestry properties.
- As appropriate to the appointment, the incumbent will:
- Seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations including effective integration with research groups and educational programming.
- Connect with stakeholders, agency, and/or industry partners to strengthen research and educational programming.
- Effectively obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for research and teaching activities.
- Mentor graduate students.
- Publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities.
- Translate research-based information into learner-centered products.
- This includes creating scholarly, innovative, and high impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance; measuring the impact of your programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.
- The incumbent will be expected to average 0.40 FTE as determined by the CASNR Academic Appointment Guidelines, and to contribute to IANR’s Regional and Community Forestry undergraduate program.
- Courses to be taught may include, but are not limited to, forest management, agroforestry, habitat management, forest ecology, silviculture, forest measurement, and natural resources policy.
- Specific course assignments may be changed over time based on School of Natural Resources needs.
- In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.
Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in forestry or forestry-related fields at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research experience in one or more of the four potential research areas.
- Teaching experience with forestry and natural resources undergraduate course.
