Position Overview

The City of Gaithersburg is seeking an innovative, progressive, "hands-on" professional to promote and support stewardship of the City's watershed resources by implementing water quality initiatives, evaluating program effectiveness, and anticipating all stormwater outreach needs.

The Watershed Restoration Specialist coordinates watershed conservation programs and informs and assists the public in watershed protection. We are looking for a positive and results-oriented self-starter who has excellent technical and problem-solving skills, is an effective communicator, is able and willing to take on a variety of responsibilities and juggle multiple projects simultaneously with minimal direction, and can see projects through from initial planning to implementation. You'll be joining an innovative and collaborative team committed to having a direct and meaningful impact on protecting and enhancing the City's environmental resources.

This is a full-time salaried "exempt" position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week (not eligible for overtime compensation under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the City's personnel regulations). Evening and weekend work is to be expected in order to fulfill the public outreach goals of this position.

Responsibilities

What you will do with us:

  • Administer programs that fulfill the requirements of the City's NPDES MS4 Permit issued by the State of Maryland, including an inspection and maintenance program and a residential rebate program.
  • Design and present educational materials and workshops.
  • Recruit and organize volunteers; build and maintain partnerships.
  • Manage, update, and maintain the Division's web pages.
  • Engage in field work and conduct technical research and analysis/evaluation to develop, implement, and maintain compliance with Citywide ordinances, programs, and policies, as well as City compliance with applicable federal and state environmental laws, rules, and permits.

Qualifications

What you need to be considered:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Education, or related field.
  • At least (3) years of demonstrated professional experience in environmental management analysis and reporting, environmental impact analysis, and/or stormwater management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and knowledge of the methods for updating geographic databases.
  • Knowledge and experience in environmental and sustainability topics, particularly water quality.
  • Experience in technical and programmatic concepts such as stream monitoring, social marketing, and website management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Organizational abilities to concurrently manage a variety of programs and to juggle competing priorities.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite; solid skills using Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • A valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • The physical ability to perform field work and occasionally lift/carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
