Description

~ The District is responsible for wastewater treatment facilities and interceptor sewers in the greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. ~

This service area encompasses the City of Cleveland and all or portions of 61 suburban municipalities in Cuyahoga, Summit, Lake and Lorain Counties and includes a diversified group of manufacturing and processing industries.

Position Overview

Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District is currently seeking a Sustainability B-STEM Intern.

Responsibilities

The intern will assist with various projects throughout the assignment, including, but not limited to:

  • Project Title:   Workplace Recycling Improvement
  • Project Description:   Work collaboratively to create educational programing and infrastructure to improve workplace recycling at the District.
    • Assist in analyzing recycling compliance at multiple facilities.
    • Assist in creating signage, infrastructure, educational materials and workshops to improve recycling.
    • Assist in the development recycling baseline metrics and goals.
  • Project Title:   Greening Employee Transportation
  • Project Description:   Assist in programming, activities and data collection around greening employee travel.
    • Assist in the completion of Bicycle Friendly Business programming and application submittal.
    • Promote and track participation in RTA Ready to Rid Program.
    • Assist in the development of NEORSD portal on the Gohio Transportation Demand platform.
  • Project Title:   Energy Data Management
  • Project Description:   Collect and enter data into the energy data management software system.
    • Electricity Data Entry.
    • Fleet Fuel Entry.
    • Water Utility Data Entry.
  • Project Title:   Landscape Maintenance Research
  • Project Description:   Research best practices in integrated pest management and sustainable landscape maintenance.
    • Research policies and specifications related to landscape maintenance.
    • Assist in drafting policies and specifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirements:

Academic Status/Standing:

  • Candidate must be enrolled in school or must have graduated within 24 months from the date of application.

Field of Study:

  • Declared Majors:  Sustainability, Environmental Science, Public Administration, Urban Planning, or a related field of study.

Degree Program Levels:

Any of the following degree program levels may qualify:

  • Associate Degree
  • Bachelor Degree (Freshman - Senior)
  • Master/Doctoral Degree
  • High School Advanced Placement Examinations and Technical/Trade School will also be considered

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Candidate must be able to work   20-40 hours per week. Working hours are Monday – Friday during normal business hours. Working hours will include a combination of regular business hours, weekend and after-hour time frames and may include legal holidays. This is a temporary position. Work hours will be adjusted as appropriate for interns who are enrolled in school.
  • Candidate must be able to commit to up to a 6-month assignment with an option to extend the assignment at NEORSD’s discretion. This internship program provides for a time-limited role at NEORSD with no express or implied guarantee of future employment beyond the assignment period. This position is governed by all applicable NEORSD administrative policies, practices and procedures related to temporary employees.
  • The District requires protective footwear (i.e., steel or composite-toed) when working in the plants, pump stations, construction sites, public rights-of-way and other posted areas. New hires are required to have protective footwear, meeting the following criteria, on the first day of employment:
    • Must be ANSI Z41-1999 or ASTM F-2412/2413 (2005) certified
    • Must have a steel or composite protective toe
    • Must be, at a minimum, a 6” work boot or 6” hiker-style boot (Note: shoes are not permitted)
    • Must have a slip-resistant sole.  It is also recommended, but not required, that footwear be waterproof and have included a shank to protect the bottom of the foot.
  • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving record in accordance with the District’s acceptable guidelines.

Compensation: $14.26 per hour
